Tom Zhang

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, but I now live in NYC as a freshman studying computer science at Columbia University.

I've always been captivated by technology, but computer science is particularly fascinating to me. My technical areas of focus are artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, and full-stack development, but I'm also passionate about exploring interconnected fields like entrepreneurship and venture capital. Currently, I'm interning at a venture-backed startup, conducting research at top universities, and leading multiple student organizations. Like many students, I haven't decided on a career path yet, but I'm interested in entering the tech world as an entrepreneur, software engineer, VC investor, or product manager.

I've had the amazing opportunity to intern at some of the best companies and institutions in the world. I'm currently working at UnifyID, an implicit authentication startup backed by top VCs including a16z, NEA, and StartX. I'm working on machine learning-based technologies that can eliminate passwords and make our digital world more secure. I'm also a Bioinformatics Research Intern at Stanford University, and previously conducted machine learning research at UC Berkeley. I've authored and co-authored several publications in prestigious journals and conferences.

I'm highly involved with the hackathon community, both as a leader and participant. I've attended a dozen or so events across the country, winning awards for many of my projects. Hackathon organizations that I lead, including HSHacks, MatadorHacks, and DeltaHacks Institute, have impacted more than 3,300 students nationwide and raised over $170,000 from companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Sequoia Capital.

In my free time, I enjoy trying different boba spots with friends, reading Quora/Medium, and skiing at Tahoe. I'm also an avid movie watcher, and you might catch me browsing YouTube if I'm being really unproductive.
